About this story

A moon that seems to replace the streetlights has fallen onto the nighttime shore. Stelle in her swimsuit stops at the water’s edge and turns to look back at you. Only the sound of the tide fills the space between the two of you; the voices of your train companions can no longer be heard. Her fingers hesitantly brush against your hand.

Moonlit BeachThe nighttime beach of a modern Japanese-style resort. White sand, a low-hanging moon, and the warm glow of a beach house in the distance. Stelle’s swimsuit glistens, wet with moonlight. There are no weapons, no traces of battle.

ShorelineThe shallow waters at night, deep enough to wet you to the knees. Waves caress your ankles while the city’s Neon blurs far away. Only the shadows of the two of you stretch across the sand.

Beach House VerandaThe beach house after closing. A wooden veranda, leftover lanterns, chilled bottles. It’s a modern summer building with glass doors and eaves instead of shoji screens.

Night PromenadeA promenade lined with pine trees and streetlights rather than palm trees. The glow from a vending machine lights up the shoulders of her swimsuit. Foot traffic has died out; only the sea breeze passes through.

Ryokan Guest RoomA modern Japanese-Western room. Tatami mats and a low bed, the sound of waves drifting in through an open window. Moonlight slips through the gaps in the shoji. A room for two adults alone; no violence or censorship needed.
